Pea Allergy

by Palmblogging @ 19.07.2008 - 08:56:01 am

Anyone heard of an allergy to peas?
I have have had tummy pains in the past with peanuts but lately I havent
eaten any and get similar pains. What I have eaten though is a lot of fresh
garden peas straight from the pod.
Now both peanuts and garden peas are legumes so since they are related is
this possibly the same allergic reaction?

IMO You do not have peanut allergy or pea allergy. As far as I know an allergy is a specific reaction which is very severe and life threatening and symptoms include swelling of the lymph nodes to the extent that breathing becomes difficult and it can be fatal. This is called anaphylactic shock. People with real allergic responses need to carry epi pens so they can zap themselves with anti histamines as soon as the allergen causes its reaction.

What it sounds like you have is an intolerance. This is much more mild and symptoms can include bloating, stomach cramps abdominal gas etc

Lots of people have this problem with beans. I think maybe your digestive system may be having problems with the amount of fibre in the raw peas/peanuts. The answer to that is to eat more fibre in your diet more regularly but build it up gradually rather than shocking your system with a whole lot of it all at once.

In the old days people expected tummy pains if they ate too much of a raw ingredient such as scrumping apples, or stuffing too many grapes etc

Nothing personal but so many people call ordinary normal physiological responses these days 'allergic reactions'.

I think you will be fine. But if you genuinely do have an allergy to peas you had better not eat them again ever.

Get what your saying mate you sound like you have expirience of full blown allergies. I got diagnosed with IBS bit like a doc telling you that you've a virus. Really will have to eat more fibre though
