Free Sat

by Palmblogging @ 30.04.2008 - 06:46:01 pm

This from Digital Spy is the satellite version of Freeview I suppose.

Freesat confirms launch date as May 6

The launch date for subscription-free satellite service Freesat has been
confirmed as May 6.

The service, developed by the BBC and ITV, is designed to encourage takeup
of free to air satellite in a manner similar to the success enjoyed by
digital terrestrial's Freeview brand. Freesat's electronic programme guide,
programme metadata and interactive services will operate entirely
independently of those provided to Sky digiboxes, and pre-launch marketing
materials from the service indicate that approximately 80 television and
radio channels have obtained a Freesat EPG slot for launch - a relatively
small proportion of the total number of free satellite TV channels.

Set-top receivers made to the Freesat spec, and to be marketed using the
Freesat brand, will include a high definition model made by Humax; non-HD
and HD models from Goodmans, Bush and Grundig.

Islanders are 'only true Lesbians'

by Palmblogging @ 30.04.2008 - 12:04:01 pm

From Orange Quirky News

Residents of the Greek island of Lesbos have launched a legal action to
demand the exclusive right to call themselves Lesbians.
The inhabitants of the island are attempting to ban the Greek Gay and
Lesbian Union from bearing the name "lesbian".
Residents of Lesbos now suffer "psychological and moral rape" from the
"seizure" of their island's name by gays, according to the complaint by
Dimitris Lambrou, a local activist.
He has set out his argument in "The Misfortune of Being Lesbian", published
on his website, reports the Daily Telegraph.
Mr Lambrou, who has the support of a member of a nationalist pagan
association, said that the case was likely to come before a court in Athens
in June.
But Evangelia Vlam, a spokesman for Olke, dismissed the claim.
"This affair is totally ridiculous," she said. "But if we are summoned by
the courts, we will be heard."
Lesbos is synonymous with the love verses of the poet Sappho, who expressed
her love of other women in poetry written in the early sixth century BC.

UK is reading laws to jail-up fake bloggers

by Palmblogging @ 30.04.2008 - 09:06:01 am

This was on Palmaddicts

UK´s Office of Fair Trading is currently evaluating & testing out penalties that are most appropriate for fake-up blogs, which often created by companies to promote their products.
Here´s the exact line: " The rules make it an offense to blog, use brand ambassadors or seed viral ads while "falsely representing oneself as a consumer." They also apply to bloggers who fail to disclose they have accepted money to write about a product. "

This will include freelance bloggers, who usually got sample products from the affiliated companies to test them out and to say something nice about them. The news could proof to be a very distasteful situation in everybody´s mouths, both for companies & bloggers. Those who are involved can be prosecuted, fined and even jailed for creating a conspiracy of false marketing hype.

Moblogging

by Palmblogging @ 30.04.2008 - 09:00:01 am

Nearly all of my post are done from my 680 using either email or the online
editor. Mainly its mail2blog but it places my photos and images at the
bottom of the post. I had tried the Typepad app to post to Palm Addicts but
it isn't set up to post how Sammy likes PA to look with images alligned to
the left. It does however place them at the top.
My question is which of the mobile blog apps available for Palms would work
on Blog.co.uk?
There are numerous Palm Blogging apps available both free and commercial
supporting several different blog systems such as moveable type and
blogger. So it will be the settings side of the system used on blog.co.uk I
will have to find out.
So if anyone has any expirience of using any kind of blogging app on any OS
let me know about what kind of set up you have used.

DAB Radio

by Palmblogging @ 30.04.2008 - 07:30:02 am

After getting the radio for Deb's dad I read this on Digital Spy. Go to
http://mobile.digitalspy.co.uk/article/ds94880.html for more.

DAB radio sales up 28% in Q1 2008

Sales of DAB radios in the first three months of 2008 were up 28% on the
same period last year.

Figures from research firm Gfk show 489,000 sets were sold during the first
quarter. The year-on-year growth was higher than the average of 16% seen in
2007.

The Digital Radio Development Bureau (DRDB) has put the growth down to
products such as clock radios and docking systems, which have increasingly
featured DAB receivers; as well as in-car DAB adapters.

The news came as several industry leaders discussed the future of the
platform at the Radio Reborn conference in London yesterday.

Peter Davis, Ofcom director of radio and multimedia, said commercial
broadcasters need to invest in stronger brands on DAB and called for a
Freeview-style relaunch.

Treo 680 - A Bargain at PC World

by Palmblogging @ 29.04.2008 - 06:54:01 pm

Seen this on the Lentil over at http://stattos.blogspot.com
Have a look at Stattos blog especially in the FA Cup run in.

"Flicking around the 'net today came across PC World's site. I see they're
flogging the Treo 680 for a penny shy of GBP150 (GBP). I reckon that's a
pretty darned good deal for a decent and unlocked (SIM free) smartphone".

Treo Email

by Palmblogging @ 29.04.2008 - 11:50:01 am

Just spent sometime on my 680 cleaning up my email account I access through
Snappermail on my 680. I cleared over 200 emails that were in various
states of download from just headers to full messages plus attachments. I
have left them on the server and will have to do that later. Even though
there is loads of memory on the 680 I freed up about 4 meg. Considering I
came to Treos from a 16 meg Zire 71 I still have the mindset that that's a
lot of space even though before clearing my 680 had around 38 meg free on
the handset and over 400meg on its sd card. Just shows that email needs a
spring clean every now and again.

New Use,Old PDA

by Palmblogging @ 29.04.2008 - 07:32:01 am

This from Palmaddicts shows what I am saying about re-using those old
devices. Just like my Visor this reader has a new use for their Axim.

Using My Axim as a GPS Navigation System

Yesterday I used my trusty Dell Axim x51v, Freedom Bluetooth GPS receiver,
TomTom Navigator software and car mount as I made my way to a coworker's
house for the first time. He lives in an area I had never been, and it
included some winding roads and wooded areas. To top it all off, I knew I
would be leaving after dark, so my GPS setup would be key. Sure enough, it
all worked flawlessly and got me there and back without any problem
whatsoever! The TomTom software gave my Axim a second life after I had
switched to a Treo smartphone and abandoned PDAs for every day use.
Sometimes re-purposing your gadgets is a useful exercise!

Kerry Katona

by Palmblogging @ 28.04.2008 - 03:20:01 pm

This from Digital Spy really takes the p@#s

Kerry Katona has signed a six-figure deal to remain as the face of
supermarket chain Iceland, say reports.

According to The Mirror, the reality TV star has agreed to a one-year
contract with the frozen food firm.

Iceland boss Malcolm Walker commented: "She's had her problems but is great
on our adverts."

Earlier this year there were reports that Katona may be axed by the company
due to the controversy surrounding her private life.

The I'm A Celebrity... winner gave birth to her fourth child, Maxwell, on
April 11.

A sixfigure deal for a year that's at least 100,000 just to say she eats
frozen food. Even though she has had a baby you can see she must eat a lot
or is that the drink.

Shed Clean

by Palmblogging @ 27.04.2008 - 11:12:01 am

We are going to get a new shed later this summer so we had a wee sort out
of what is there already. As we were pulling stuff out to see what's for
throwing out Tegan was rediscovering old toys she has not seen since last
summer and it was a nightmare to get anything thrown out. Me and Debs were
doing it and she had a clear plan in her head, this sounds great but there
was a problem. I didn't know what this plan was so often we ended up at
cross purposes. How often does that happen to you chaps out there you're
busy thinking you are doing what needs seen to only to get someone, usually
your other half, standing looking at you shaking their head and then ask
what the hell you think your doing? Ah I suppose that just how these things
go.

Several years ago, we developed many of our great titles for the Palm OS
platform. However, in February of 2007 the decision to stop development for
the Palm platform was made and our products were then discontinued.
Until now, all of these titles were only available to customers who had
purchased the games in the past. Due to an incredibly high demand, we have
now released all of our past Palm titles for FREE!
However, please be advised that these titles come with no warranty, no
support, and may well not work on your device (the very reason we
discontinued development for the platform). If you have any troubles with
the games, do not contact support as you will not receive a reply.
Enjoy!

Gadget Guy Does It Again

by Palmblogging @ 26.04.2008 - 03:26:01 pm

Had to have a laugh at Murray at Palm-Mac latest revelation today.

"Oh dear, it's another daft gadget purchase from the Palm-Macster and
another one that can only be justified by some seriously over-convoluted
gadget-mongering."

"Yep, I have just bought for ?95, a 5 year old PowerBook G4.......... "

Read all this article at and find out why I'm laughing. Remember I have a
Psion Revo bought new years back that is still a secret from my other half.

Well Oiled

by Palmblogging @ 25.04.2008 - 06:20:01 pm

I put the oil I had got at dinnertime in the car and boy its quieter. What
a difference. The amount I had to put in was shocking though. 2 and a bit
liters and that was to about three quarters full. Have to keep an eye on
that and not let it get so low again.

Fueled Up

by Palmblogging @ 25.04.2008 - 11:46:01 am

That's my tank full and to the bargain I also put oil in the engine. I
think when you go around a corner and a couple of red lights on the dash
come on its time to do something about it. So the car is ship shape just
now. I will still have to decide about how much travelling I will have to
do though.

AAA Batteries

by Palmblogging @ 25.04.2008 - 09:42:01 am

When I'm out at lunch time I will have to get a pack of AAA batteries for
Visor and GPS use. It will be handy to have them in the car for whenever
the Visor or Magellans rundown. While Googling earlier in the week I came
across a site call Stephanies Visor Modification and it showed hope to put
rechargable batteries in the Visor and how to mod the cradle to allow them
to recharge while in the Visor using current from the usb.
This is a really old site cause had a sister site Newton Modifications.

Petrol

by Palmblogging @ 25.04.2008 - 08:34:01 am

So all this talk of shortages is taking effect up here in Fife. I have seen 3 garages today that are out of fuel. I have half a tank but am due to get my other two this weekend. Its a weekend total mileage of 160ish miles so that's £20 quids worth anyway, that's my half tank away. So if I don't get fuel later its either get the kids or not get to work next week. Will go out at lunch time and see about filling up.

TONKA

by Palmblogging @ 24.04.2008 - 09:56:01 am

Tegan is in P2 and they are doing about old toys or toys from olden days as
she put it. " eh Dad like you played with when you were little". God she
make me feek old. Anyway Debs remembered there was old Tonka toys up the
attic. Our eldest boy played with them and before that they came from a
cousin of Debbies. One a Toymaster articulated truck was date 1978 so for a
6 year old that is olden days. When we were up the attic looking I had the
misfortune to bump nae impaled my head on a nail in the roof. Tears came to
my eyes and my head is still sore.
So today Tegs is away with these for her class to see.
When I was young Tonka was a must have boys toy. We were never fortunate
enough to get any but my own cousins did and we love visiting to play with
them. They had a couple of trucks that were strong enough to tie to the
feet and use as skates. Ah happy days.
