REMEMBER YOUR BACKUPS

by Palmblogging @ 29.07.2007 - 11:26:01 pm

What a clutz, fool, dingbat or dweeb I have been today. On seeing that
Palmary Clock had been updated I checked to see if Clock Wireless had. It
had a small upgrade so I thought I would download the update. Well
something went wrong and the new version didn't install right and wiped the
version I had. So on and of all day I tried to reinstall.
So my realisation just a while ago that I could have restored it from my
backup on the card stunned me a little. It happens every now and again that
as a Palm user for around 6 years ,that even though you think you know a
lot about your device you miss the obvious. We all read
stories of potential Palm disaster and know the importance of backups.
Just remember they are there.

ASUS EEE PC BAD NEWS FOR PALM FOLEO?

by Palmblogging @ 26.07.2007 - 09:00:01 pm

Just got issue 64 of PDA Essentials magazine today and came across this
potential Foleo beater. According to PDA Essentials the Asus Eee PC is
smaller and cheaper, and while designed around the laptop for every child
projects around the world it would do all reqiring a secondary way to get
the web and email. It has 4,8 or 16 Gig of Flash storage and runs Linux and
can run XP. It a 7 inch screen, WiFi and a usable keyboard and a price
around $199. Looks like available from Q3 2007. More info at www.asus.com.

The Dedication of The Blogger.

by Palmblogging @ 26.07.2007 - 10:52:01 am

Consider the following statistics
July 2007 (13)
June 2007 (20)
May 2007 (26)
April 2007 (24)
March 2007 (54)
February 2007 (59)
January 2007 (57)
December 2006 (22) and this was the last week and a half of the month.
The was my post count on my blog over the past half year. Just me with
thoughts about Palms and othe stuff. There has been a good few on new
software available on mytreo.net or memoware. A few plugs for Palm-Mac and
Palm Addicts and a few repeated posts. But one thing stands out that the
number of posts per month is in decline. It grieves me a bit. Is it lack of
things to say or new stuff to report on or is it just a lack of comittment.
Yes I've had personal stuff that has taken up time, lack of slack time at
work were I could rattle up a post and send it but just a lack of
dedication.
So what was the purpose of the ramble above then? It just to let you know
that once you've dabbled your toes in the world of blogging then ypu can
really appretiate the work put in by Sammy, Murray, May, Shuan and Sheldon
on their respective Palm sites. It amazes me the quality of articles and
humour out there.
I don't know how much longer my own blog will last but to have the
longevity of PA has set the bar high for others.
Thaks to all at Palm Addicts, Palm-mac, The Morning Paper and Palm
Discovery who contribute to my daily reads

PANASONIC TOUGHBOOK

by Palmblogging @ 24.07.2007 - 08:58:01 am

We had a washing machine breakdown and had the repair guy out today. He
decided to control board had went so replaced it. He had to check the old
board to see if it could tell him the fault and programme the new one for
our make of machine. To do this he used what looked like a small laptop.
It was while watching him I realised it had a touchscreen. I remember
hearing that this could be the next step for PCs but the guy told us this
was 5 years old. It also had a Vodaphone data comms card in it complete
with it own wee dinky aerial. In a few taps after connecting the neq board
he got it programmed then back in the machine and we were in business again.
The repairmans biggest gripe was the keyboard being just to small and
typing was a one finger job. It was great to see an old piece of kit like
this the still seems ahead of its time.

Email Set Ups.

by Palmblogging @ 23.07.2007 - 06:38:01 pm

I think the main use of my Treo is email. When I got it I signed up for an
orange.net email account and it has been my main address I have used. But
what about my orphaned addresses that I just look at now and again. Well
due to looking at Freecycle, a series of Yahoo groups that help in the
recycling of unwanted stuff, I had cause to use my old yahoo address. I
thought that I wouldn't be able to get this through my Treo so it was of
Googling to see if I was wrong. Well it turns out that if I had bothered to
look in my mail options I could get POP access. It even gave all the port
settings and the like. So now Treo has Snappermail set up for this

Well that left my oldest address a beeb.net one that came with our dialup
connection. I had tried to figure out the pop address but never had any
luck. Once while looking for info on FairUse Wizard to get DVD on my Palms
I came across the missing piece. It turns out that if I had put pop3 rather
than just pop. I made a new account in Snappermail and I was in business.
I use different addresses in different situations but still get all
replies on my Treo

KNOWLEDGE AT HAND

by Palmblogging @ 23.07.2007 - 06:38:01 pm

Besides all the gaming, multimedia functions and communication options a
Treo provides you with for I think the mind blowing bit for me is the
sources of knowledge it unlocks. Take yesterday our eldest son needed to
contact O2UK as his sim had died. He had a spare sim but didn't know the
number to phone O2 customer services. He could have spent hours looking for
the booklet with it or we could google for it on the PC. It would take a
good few minutes to boot up the PC but not the Treo. Before you know it I
had the number for him.
So that's the internet but also you can download and install dictionaries,
my current being Noah Full Version which is now freeware, translation
software, encyclopedia and reference books. So at your finger tips you can
have hundreds of megabytes of information.
My favourite source just now is using Quickipedia. I know Wikipedia has it
detractors to its accuracy but so do other establishment online
encyclopedias. It is really easy to use and brings Wiki to you in your
Palm, both types.
A few years ago when I was a boy this would have been unthinkable but hear
it is.

Zire71 or Ice Cream

by Palmblogging @ 16.07.2007 - 06:50:02 pm

Yes this is what I was thinking in the car yesterday while travelling to
Perth. Its only a 20 minute run but sometimes Tegan can be a bit nippy. Eye
spy gets frustrating when something beginning with A turns out to be "a
house" but that's five year olds for you. So why Zire or ice cream.
Well I had converted/ripped The Sponge Bob Squarepants Movie from DVD using
Fair Use Wizard and got it down to 200meg ideal for the space on my Zire
71s 1gig sd card. So using TCPMP Tegan sat quiite as a mouse watching this
going to Perth. We did a bit of shopping and for lunch went to a global
brand known for its golden M. We left with an ice cream for Tegan which she
quietly munched at it the car. Well the answer to the post title became
evident when the remains of the ice cream was handed to mum and SpongeBob
was back on the Palm.
So we had an answer. The Zire 71 with TCPMP and a cartoon sponge keeps a 5
year old quieter for longer than a McFlurry.
No one was harmed during this period of research. Actualy mum and me
enjoyed the quiet.

Further Child Pleasers

by Palmblogging @ 05.07.2007 - 02:24:02 pm

To day it was the turn of audiobooks to be put on the Treo. To start with
Peter Rabbit stories. I found that Project Gutenberg has audio as well as
Ebooks and yes they are free. This is one of the best places for classic
out of copyright books. Dickins, Verne, Wilde and the rest. The books are
in a variety of formats and suit loads of eqipment. If your mobile handles
text why not take some classic reading with you where ever you go.
The Audio books will be great for our little one in the car over the
holidays.

Free TV

by Palmblogging @ 05.07.2007 - 10:24:01 am

Not Freeview, Freesat or hacking $ky or Virgin but an actual TV set. Yes
Freecycle came up trumps with Adam in Kirkcaldy coming up trumps with an
old Goodmans nicam 20 odd inch screen set. Yes or widescreen died. It spent
a few months with the picture going on and off , then looking less than 4:3
on a 16:9 screen. Finally the picture narrowed went away and the TV
switched its self of. Powering up again there was sound but it looked as if
on standby.
So after setting up the free replacement it was skip sited today.
The replacement needed a fuse and our own remote works on most functions
and the freeview digi box does the rest. It will certainly do til we get a
better set.

Remember out there that you can pick up stuff for free or pass on stuff you
no longer need with FREECYCLE. Find your local group at

To Please a Child ( Summer Hols Stress Buster)

by Palmblogging @ 04.07.2007 - 11:44:01 am

I have used TCPMP on my Treo and Zire to watch Sky at Night episodes for
sometime. The programmes come on cd and it is easy to copy the mpeg file
and convert with Kinoma Producer. I then put them on the card and can view
them later.

Now having a 5 year old the novelty of TV progs on the Palms wore thin a
while ago as the content was boring. Hence my weekends effort. Chitty
Chitty Bang Bang is now residing happily on TREO 600's 1 gig card. I still
have to show her it but she will be impressed, as I certainly was.

The file outputed using FairUse Wizard gave me cause for concern at 600meg.
A bit big I thought. I thought about sticking it through Kinoma but it
didn't recognise some formats. So in the end I just stuck it on the card
and on opening it with TCPMP it played, so job done.

I will play around with bit rates and output file size the next time I do
this to reduce the output to even 250meg to get at least 2 films on my Treo.

I played the file on both Treo and my Zire71 and was amazed at the picture
quality on Zire.

I always thought doing things like this was well beyond my IT capabilities
but FairUse is easy enough to use and Googling for info in relation to it
and Palms brought up a wealth of info for my next project with DVDs to Palm.

Email and Mobile Date Rates

by Palmblogging @ 03.07.2007 - 11:24:01 am

Just as I finished my last post I realised that all this sorting out of email addresses on my Treo 600 is only possible cause of Oranges £5.00 a week bundle. If I didn't use this I couldn't keep up with the data costs.
Once my bundle had ran out weekend past I got a text from Orange saying it was dicontinued but on dialling 450 it was still an Orange World Extra option so I will just have to see if it stays. Here's hoping.

Freecycle

by Palmblogging @ 03.07.2007 - 11:18:02 am

I have been having a look on our local Freecycle groups recently and have
actually picked a few things up. I remember when first going on Ebay and
how addictive it became trying to get things cheap, well how about free. I
am relly scared this could get a habit. This was the main reason for the
sorting out email thing yesterday.

So if you are looking to get rid of something others can use or looking for
something and things are tight then look at www.freecycle.org and find you
local group.

Email accounts

by Palmblogging @ 02.07.2007 - 03:16:01 pm

I am currently runnig with 3 email accounts. I have accounts with Orange,
Yahoo and Beeb.net. I have mainly used the orange one with my Treo as they
gave good setup instructions but today with a bit of well thought out
Googling I now have my beeb.net and Yahoo.co.uk mail on my Treo. I use
snappermail and have set up inboxes for each account to save confusion.
The reason for this was to receive mail relating to stuff on Freecycle that
is a yahoo group and had that as my email. It will also allow me to
actively manage my beeb.net account that just gathers mail til full and I
get advisory messages to that effect. I will continue like this until I
sort it all to just use one address.
