Treo Applog

by Palmblogging @ 31.01.2007 - 10:10:01 am

This is an AK App Log screen capture from my Treo. I think compared to the one from the Zire 71 its show a huge difference in the usage of a connected device. The only similarity is using Versamail for emails using to mobile2blog way of posting

No Sleep but Straighteners

by Palmblogging @ 30.01.2007 - 07:36:01 am

30/1/07 1:52 am
Well by the time I do post this I hope to have gotten a few hours of sleep. Just been down stairs for a fag and drink of juice and had a look on my blog to check I covered my comments on your comments, which I think I have. Anyway most of the comments were on non-Palm posts so I thought I would let you know about my night.
Earlier I got our little one who's 5 sorted for her bath. Well I was told, no ordered that there should be no bubble bath cause Baby Born was coming in. I got through all that and somehow we fell out, toots started on about wanting mum but I persevered and eventually we were best buds again. I've seen to her at bath, supper and bedtime since she was small and had a milk allergy and it gives mum a break from her in the evening when I come home from work. So up to bed and storytime, we have returned to the second Oz book after the umpteenth re-reading of The Wizard of Oz. My daughter is 5 but I still think this is a good one to read to her. Ok the film is different but lets them visualise things easier but the book just gives you more. If you can find it do give it a try as my other two at 12 and 9 are enjoying this too.
Well little one went to sleep and we did a bit of telly. My partner had washed her hair earlier when our daughter was busy so she waited until it was dry and got her straighteners on it. Now since well before Christmas I have not had my hair cut to its baldness defying shortness( great eh to cover up lack of hair us blokes scalp it as short as it goes). So its getting quite long and messy now when herself decides she wants to have a go with the straighteners on me. So I said what the hell and sat in front of her. I'm pretty sure she got both ears but I was assured that she was miles away and it was just heat not burning. So here I am looking at a mirror with my face but what appears to be someone elses hair on my head. It's just so different for me but she really likes it. God I'll get really ribbed at work for this as I daren't wash it in the morning.

Zire 71 Usage

by Palmblogging @ 30.01.2007 - 07:36:01 am

Post composed 30/1/07 1:51 am
You can see from this screen capture using Linkesofts app Screen Shot how my Zire is used. This picture below shows the most useage of apps. The number is the amount of seconds the app has been used. Isilo is used for ebook reading and is just short of 10000 minutes. Its way ahead of Ereader and it itself ahead of other apps. I some times reset AppLog to zero but the last time was a while ago.
The thing that interests me the most is that the useage of Versamil has only been since I started this blog. I still compose some posts at bedtime and use Wireless Modem on the Treo to send them. Most of the photo posts are from 71 and I think it handles them better than the Treo.
I will keep doing this at night with 71 and the onscreen popup keyboard rather than bring Treo up at night.

Thank For Your Comments

by Palmblogging @ 30.01.2007 - 07:36:01 am

A GREAT BBBIIIGGIG THANK YOU for all your comments to my posts, it great knowing I am not just posting for he sake of it but others do read.

Asda online shopping - I never really thought of how much doing shopping cost in terms of your own hourly rate.

Proporta stuff - Retro PDA stylus in wood I really don't know if your joking or not.

Mika - A few weeks now since I first heard it and still sounds good. Possibly the best tune of 2007 and January is not finished yet. The charts will be all downhill now.

Wikipedia challange - Please give this a go. It is quite addictive when you start. Anyone with a bit of lateral thinking will do it well. With the tomato to cordless drill thing first find a link for Britain somewhere on the tomato entry, click the link. Then on the page for Britain find history, then industrial revolution. The find tools or tooling and its easy from there.
Please remember if this takes of you read it first at Palmblogging. If some big company says its their idea back me up we'll sue them and we can all be rich

New Phone?

by Palmblogging @ 28.01.2007 - 08:42:02 pm

I was in Perth today and the middle boy of ours was looking to buy a new phone. He was looking for a Samsung but I can't remember the model. Anyway I was in all the mobile phone shops in Perth plus Argos and we looked round the pay and go phones and I had a quick look at the pay monthlies just to see what's available.
In doing this I saw no Treos as Vodaphone was shut but there was plenty Windows based phones. In terms of spec and style I didn't see anything that I would have to replace my Treo 600. I used to go to shops with mobiles and lust over them but now and since I got my Treo I don't give them a thought. Now that I have a Treo I think that if it were to die on me tomorrow it would have to be replaced by a Treo. I would have to get a 650 for the hires screen but if money is tight I would have another 600 or even a 270. I am now totally a treophile.

Asda online shopping

by Palmblogging @ 28.01.2007 - 04:54:02 pm

Well at 2.15 I looked out the back window and saw a van pull up with Asda on the side. The shopping we did onWednesday had arrived. I went don and gave the guy a hand and in no time it was lying on the kitchen floor ready for getting put away. There was one subsitution and 3 items out of stock, I bet they were on the shop floor though. We were really happy with how it went and ill do the same in a fortnight. It's well worth the delivery fee to save the time and stress of the monthly trip into the shop.

CIA World Factbook

by Palmblogging @ 26.01.2007 - 07:58:06 pm

Donloaded this the other day from www.memoware.com for ereader as it seemed to be the most up to date version. It weighs in at over 5meg so I did this at work on broadband rather than the dial up at home.
It gives loads of facts and data on every recognised country in the world as compiled by those well known geographers the CIA.
It is this data that is used in some other Palm apps namely Encyclopedia To Go.Ok the ebook version doesn't have all the whistle and bells interface that Encyc To Go has but the infos there and the flags. This is one of those must have information sources that is really handy at work when discussion at lunch time is about country size, poulation or whatever. Yes sometimes this happens believe it or not.

It's Arrived from Proporta

by Palmblogging @ 26.01.2007 - 07:54:02 pm

Well my Palm Addicts prize arrived today. I received a case, 3 in 1 stylus, screen protector and sync and charge cable.
The stylus fits better than the original, the case has aluminium reinforement in it. The sync and charge cable will be dead handy for work and the feel of stylus on screen has greatly improved with the screen protector.
So thanks to PA and Proporta its like getting my Treo again.
Boy this is a great phone.

Palm M130

by Palmblogging @ 26.01.2007 - 12:42:01 pm

Ben scouting about on Ebay recently looking for a M130 for my other half. She uses the Visor Deluxe for Palmjongg and Text Twist and its a remote control for our digibox. I would like to get it for her as before Christmas she gave the E2 we got for our eldest boy a work out and loved Bejewelled in colour. The colour screen also means the light could go of and I could introduce her to the joy I find in Ebooks. So this may be bought as a Valentines gift. The other things is I have Palm os devices 3.1 and 5.2.1 but this would be os 4.1 so a slight difference there to try out. So if anyone has a M130 the are getting rid of or gathering dust email me and I'll give it a new home.

Asda Online Shopping

by Palmblogging @ 25.01.2007 - 07:30:01 pm

Well after my partners exitement at finding out that Asda home delivery is available in out area we shopped last night. 2 hours or so online to get exactly one half of our monthly shop. This should mean a fortnightly shop so we'll see how that pans out. The reason for the time it took is finding stuff in the different "ailses" and the rather strange search facility. When searching for tomato sauce some baby stuff and fruit were suggested early but you had to look about for ketchup.
Anyway we were told by someone who has did this before that the first shop is the longest as you populate your shopping list so thing will get easier. There is one way to speed this up though if you type in a number of your last instore reciept and it gives you a shopping list based on that. Rather eerie that all that is saved and can be accessed so easy.

Fargo Heap Resizer

by Palmblogging @ 24.01.2007 - 07:30:02 pm

This app allows you to increase the dynamic heap memory on Zire 71, Tungsten T and T2's. It has come in handy on Zire enlarging the heap from 1mb to almost 1.8mb.
There is UDMH that may do a better job than this and for other devices but this one is freeware.
How does this work though you may wonder. Well read about it on freewarepalm as its too complicated for me.

Wikipedia Challenge

by Palmblogging @ 24.01.2007 - 07:30:02 pm

This is something to try on Wikipedia. Pick two thing at random say tomatoes and cordless drills. Then try to use the links in Wikipedia to link the two things in as few moves as possible. I managed to link the above in 6 or 7 moves. If this takes of into some sad craze you heard it first on Palmblogging.

Phones as Dirty as Toilets

by Palmblogging @ 24.01.2007 - 07:30:02 pm

Noticed this on Palm Addicts

Our Treo phones are filthy
Not the nicest of stories but your Treo may be a lot dirtier than your toilet. "Seems as though the attack of the cellphones has escaped our hospitals and entered our homes. According to research done research by UK retailer Dial-a-Phone, our mobile devices contain more bacteria than the bottom of our shoes and even the ol' porcelain throne

I must thank her and Lindsey at PA for being so quick in contacting me.

by Palmblogging @ 23.01.2007 - 01:42:01 pm

I have had a look at the site and there is still plenty to be had for my devices, even cases for the Handspring. So I will have to give it somethought when contacted.
The only dilema is do I get something for myself or our middle boy for his E2. An aluminium case would make it safe to carry to school and get more use from it.

Murray over at PalmMac has given us a mention yesterday. Thanks Murray
His site as the name suggests covers Palms and Macs as well as Aberdeen FC at times. So give it a look at http://palmmac.typepad.com/palmmac/.
I will have to see if I can and some link to this site for all the Palm site I visit on and off. I suppose that will be a PC job though. I think it will be worth doing and it will only be my second PC usage on this blog

Other Essential Apps

by Palmblogging @ 20.01.2007 - 08:02:01 pm

As previously mentioned I used BackupMan to backup both Zire71 and Treo600. Screen shot below.
Other apps that are useful to max the ram on both devices are Flyzip and PowerRun. FlyZip can compress files on the device or to card but can cause problems with apps with .prc and .pdb parts, then I use PowerRun as it can lump them together and transfer to a SD card. Powerrun isnt good at keeping your place in ereader so its FlyZipped. I have always been looking for a zipper that will work on Palm OS 3.1 for the Handspring Visor Deluxe to max the megre 8meg that it has but now joy yet.

Blazer Google or Orange

by Palmblogging @ 20.01.2007 - 02:18:01 pm

When I have trouble with browsing with my Treo600 and I get errors or pages not loading I allways blame Orange but on reflecttion there is probably more to this.
If its a page through Google and its mobile search it could be here. It could also be Blazer that has a pro lem at its server.
So as you see it can be anyone of these things. It still seems to result in the same thing, I can't get what I want to look at.

Sorting out PC

by Palmblogging @ 20.01.2007 - 01:56:01 pm

So I decided this morning to sort out the computer. Its a Sony Viao laptop that's around 4 years old. My partner was trying to get a look at Asda's website to see if we could get home delivery. The connection seems fast enough but downloading pages was slow and there were a few errors. As this was going on I thought that at any moment it would really piss her of and it did. It was then that she asked if I had down anything with Real Player as I had previously said it maybe the problem.
So this morning I had a cleanup and Real Players away along with varios apps that don't or won't get used.
I had a try on the net and there seems to be a difference so we'll see tonight if she has another go. Anyone with a Palm and the bundled RealPlayer take head.

Updates by Palm

by Palmblogging @ 20.01.2007 - 08:30:01 am

Noticed on Palm Addicts that there is a Camera Update/Patch available for the Treo 680. It has been found that there is a glitch that stops the camera from fully closing and causes battery drain on the device.
I suppose it opens the whole thing about companies producing items, wether hardware or software, that need fixes after release. Palm has been quite good at getting fixes out for devices in the past. A look at the device support pages of Palms website shows this. So whatever device you have check to see you have any patches Palm have produced and get them. I still have to do this with the E2 we got our eldest boy at Chistmas as he has a bit of touchscreen drift.
I will have to do this on Monday as the PC at home is playing up just now internet connection slow to nonexistant. I blame the desktop part of RealPlayer but its a bitch to get rid of seemingly. So will have to bit the bullet and get it done.

by Palmblogging @ 19.01.2007 - 11:00:02 am

This is my fail safe in event of a hard reset on both Treo and Zire 71. The one thing I need to remember is to backup to a spare card incaae I corrupt the card again. Remember to also backup the SD card with its info incase of corruption.
I have the Treo set to backup at 8.00 every morning after I have updated my mRSS feeds.
From PA
BackupMan 2.2 has been updated on Palmgear today. "BackupMan has been designed to be an intuitive, easy to use solution enabling "set it and forget it" backups of your handheld. Snow

Orange GPRS

by Palmblogging @ 19.01.2007 - 09:40:01 am

Well Orange is up and going again after last nights outage. Couldn't post either using CSD connection. I had composed a post about this and tried to send it but no go and it disappeared somewhere in Treo. So back to normal and Treo fully operational.
When I couldn't connect on the Treo I shifted my sim into the Nokia 3510i that still kicks about and got a Network Temp Error message which is clearer that Palms check network settings.SO Knew it was Orange.
This does not happen often but annoying when it does.

Psion Revo

by Palmblogging @ 16.01.2007 - 06:12:01 pm

Still no further in getting Revo online. I had it anb the Treo talking with Wireless Modem but after fiddling with settings they stopped. I will hard reset Revo and try again.
I have found to desktop software disc and cable/cradle so I will be able to make sure all the supplied software is installed on Revo plus any hacks or enhancements I find.
Even though Revo's telling me it has 80% battery it closes down when tapping the screen so the hard reset will sort that. I did think it charged fairly quick the last time. If all else fails I will have to try the old trick tht has been mentioned with Revo's of charging it in the fridge. This is to do with a sensor that says when the battery is full as ir becomes hot, so the cold of a fridge fools it and lets the battery charge better

Improving All the Time

by Palmblogging @ 16.01.2007 - 05:00:02 pm

I would like to think that I am improving what I am doing on the site as I go but today I may have had a big breakthrough. In earlier editions of PDAEssentials I was amazed at the pictures of apps actually from a PDA screen and remembered that it was a piece of software called ScreenShot from www.linkesoft.com. So today I downloaded it and can add pictures of apps I mention here. So below ill be probably the top apps I would recommend
1) LauncherX I have this on Treo600 and Zire71. I have also tried an early version of this on the Handspring Visor Deluxe.

2) Text Twist from Astraware. I really like this word game and can lose hours with it. My only gripe is the American English word database it must use.

3) Planetarium from www.aho.ch I have copies of Astronomist, 2Sky and this on Zire71 but it is this I use most of the time.

Palm App Usage

by Palmblogging @ 16.01.2007 - 05:00:02 pm

I'd put AkAppLog on my Treo600 to find out which apps I used the most and to compare that with the Zire. The most used on the Treo was Blazer the web browser and on Zire it as Isilo a document/ebook reader.
This pretty much is what I had expected.
The main reason for getting the Treo was a phone upgrade as the Nokia 3510i I had was no longer handling Google mobile that well. Using the Treo with Blazer was a totally different thing. Larger screen, better resolution and better navigation for a start. Some people down Blazer as a browser but I have stuck with it even afer trialing some others. I just wish I had it for Zire71. 71 has Xiino as a browser when using Treo and Wireless modem and it feels so different. If viewing images the 320x320 screen is great nd makes me hanker over a newer Treo but the 600 still does a good job. As I said Isilo is in front with 71 and thats a lot of the reading I do at night but I have a feeling that Versamail will gradually creep up there. If only I could cut and paste the AppLog results I could clear it each week and have my on Top Ten of usage on both devices.
The use of this handy but totally nonessential software has proved to me that I use 71 as mainly a classic PDA and Treo is the communication device. I think things will stay that way until I get a newer hires Treo or 71 dies on me or I make do with the lesser screen and get a 2gig card and sort everything to my Treo and let my other half use 71 as her own.

Treo600 Uses

by Palmblogging @ 16.01.2007 - 04:02:01 pm

SHOPPING STRESS RELIEF

A few time since my summer purchase of a 2nd hand Treo600 from ebay it has really helped when shopping. Is it use of Handyshopper to check a shopping list NO. Is it use of the web to compare prices NO. Is it the sms, phone or email to contact home with an queries about shopping No. The main use of Treo when relieving stress is to occupy my 5 year old Tegan when she gets bored. A blast of Crazy Daisy, a look at Little Angel but mostly using the notes replacement Write Now as a drawing pad. I hadn't even shown her how to use it and she was rubbing out changing colour and pen thickness. This shows how well this prog work I think. So shopping got done with no hassle from Tegs. Well done Treo well done Write Now.
